Nice Guys Announce Dr. Peter Farrell as 2010 Nice Guy of the Year.

San Diego – Nice Guys is holding a lunch on Wednesday July 14, 2010 to announce their “Nice Guy of the Year” Peter Farrell.”  Farrell will be present at the lunch when the official announcement is made to their general membership:

The Nice Guys, a local non-profit organization, is celebrating its 31st anniversary and will honor Farrell at their major fundraising event in the fall.  This year’s dinner will be held at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina on Saturday, October 16, 2010.  Each year, the Nice Guys recognize someone who has given their time, money and support to help San Diegans improve their lives.

Since 1979, Nice Guys has given more than $10.8 million, with 100% of every dollar raised going to individual San Diegans who need a “one time” helping hand to get their lives back on track, as well as to other charitable organizations with a similar mission.  Additionally, Nice Guys continues to provide food and financial assistance to hundreds of military families whose loved ones have been deployed to Iraq.  The majority of this year’s proceeds will be used to fund the cases identified monthly by the Nice Guys Charity Committee.  The balance of the funds raised will be used to assist organizations selected by the Nice Guys and Peter Farrell.  The recipients will be announced a few weeks prior to the event in the fall.

Peter Farrell is Founder and Executive Chairman of NYSE-listed ResMed Inc., a global leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of innovative  products for the diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep-disordered breathing. Born in Sydney, Australia, he has won numerous civic, academic and professional awards including the Australian, San Diego and US National Entrepreneur of the Year awards for Life Sciences.   He holds bachelors and masters degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney and MIT, a PhD in bioengineering from the University of Washington as well as a Doctor of Science from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney for research related to treatment with the artificial kidney.  He has published 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He also holds fellowships at several universities and academies, including the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In 2004 he was made a member of the Order of Australia.

Farrell serves on the boards of the UCSD Rady Business School and the Jacobs School of Engineering. He’s current Chair of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center at UCSD and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UNSW.  He is also Chair of the Executive Council of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and President of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

His numerous charitable interests include MIT, UCSD, UNSW, the University of Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and the San Diego and Sydney Operas. He has also gifted a Chair in Sleep Medicine to Harvard and significantly supports the MIT/Harvard Health Science and Technology Program. Along with his wife and three children on the Board, the Farrell Family Foundation contributes to many San Diego and international causes.

“We are privileged to have Dr. Farrell as our Nice Guy of the Year,” said Nice Guys President, Kevin Kelly.  “His achievements as a businessman are matched only by his generosity and caring for others in our community.  He is a dedicated community leader who has been a long-time contributor to many organizations in San Diego. He exemplifies what the Nice Guys organization and its members are all about.”

The Nice Guys was formed in 1979 to raise money for individuals who need a helping hand up to get their lives back on track.  The non-profit organization has no staff and is run entirely by dedicated men and women community volunteers.  “Every single dollar we raise goes to needy San Diegans,” said Rupe Linley, this year’s Nice Guy of the Year Committee Chair.

Nice Guys Mike Neil in the news

by admin

The first thing you should know about our Irishman of the Year, Mike Neil, is that, rather than ride in a convertible as our honorees usually do, he insisted that he instead march with the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. The Friendly Sons have appointed him their “Parade Master for Life,” so in this year’s Parade you will see Mike leading the lads and their precision marching unit as he has done so well for over 20 years.

For the record, Brigadier General Michael I. Neil was born in Long Beach, CA and graduated from San Diego State University in 1962 with a B.A. degree in Pre-Law, and an L.L.B. degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley in 1966. After completion of Office Candidates School at Quantico, VA, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and upon graduation he was ordered to the 1st Marine Division for duty in the Republic of Vietnam.

He served as a platoon commander with Company D, 15th Battalion, 7th Marines and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action and later received the Navy Cross as a result of combat action. He then became an aerial observer assigned with the Air Observer Section, 1st Marine Division at Marble Mountain and was awarded six Air Medals. Returning to the U.S. in July, 1968, he was assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, for duty in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate serving as both a defense attorney and prosecutor in the legal offices of MCRD, until his release from active duty March 1970.

Navy Cross

The Navy Cross: The second highest award for combat bravery the United States Navey can bestow.

Thereafter he attended the Reserve Amphibious Warfare School, the Reserve Command and Staff College, participated in the Reserve Counterpart Training and served as the Officer-in-Charge, Battalion, 7th Marines as the Battalion S-3 Tactical Exercise Control Group for the 5th Marine’s Combined Arms Exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, CA. He was then assigned to extended active duty with 1st Marine Amphibious Force, serving as Executive Officer of the Exercise Control Group Freedom Pennant I and II in Perth, Australia.

He served as Commanding Officer, 4th Tank Battalion located in San Diego and then with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Reserve Augmentation Unit as the Assistant G-3 for Plans, participating as Commanding General, IMEF during war games, including the annual Global War Game at Newport, RI. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1989. In September, 1990 he took command of Camp Pendleton as a result of Operation Desert Shield. At the time of his retirement on August 1, 1993, General Neil was the Assistant Division Commander of the 4th Marine Division.

In civilian life he is president and lead attorney of the law firm of Neil, Dymott, Frank, Mcfall & Trexler, specializing in civil litigation. He and his wife Jan have two children, Megan Louise and Sean Brendan.

Who We Are:

Family is the main focus of the Nice Guys. The majority of the money we raise goes to help families who have somehow “fallen through the cracks.” A medical bill, a car repair, clothes needed after a house fire, a wheelchair for a young man injured while being a Good Samaritan – this is the type of assistance offered by the Nice Guys. Our goal is always to get people back on their feet and to be, once again, self sufficient.

Who We Help:

The Nice Guys have helped hundreds of deserving individuals and families throughout the San Diego community. Each year, we receive hundreds of requests for assistance from needy San Diegans. These requests are individually researched by members of the Charity Committee for approval. Requests come from individuals who might be temporarily unable to work, are caretakers for a special needs family member, or have had some unexpected life changing experience that require one time assistance.
