San Diego – Nice Guys is holding a lunch on Wednesday July 13, 2011 to announce their “Nice Guy of the Year, Ted Rossin.” Rossin will attend the lunch when the official announcement is made to their general membership:

Nice Guys Lunch and Press Conference
Wednesday, July 13 11:30 Press conference 12:00 lunch and program
Tom Hamm’s Lighthouse 2150 Harbor Island Drive On Harbor Island

The Nice Guys, a local non-profit organization, is celebrating its 32nd anniversary and will honor Rossin at their major fundraising event in the fall. This year’s dinner will be held at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina (formerly San Diego Marriot Hotel & Marina).on Saturday, October 15, 2011. Each year, the Nice Guys recognize someone who has given their time, money and support to help San Diegans improve their lives.

Since 1979, Nice Guys has given more than $12 million, with 100% of every dollar raised going to individual San Diegans who need a “one time” helping hand to get their lives back on track, as well as to other charitable organizations with a similar mission. Additionally, Nice Guys continues to provide food and financial assistance to hundreds of military families whose loved ones have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The majority of this year’s proceeds will be used to fund the cases identified monthly by the Nice Guys Charity Committee. The balance of the funds raised will be used for the Nice Guy’s Victory Fund, to assist military families and the Bannister Family House, an organization selected by Nice of the Year, Ted Rossin.

Rossin, a leader in the San Diego’s steel industry, was born in Chicago and moved to Indiana with his family when he was eight. He spent his childhood there and began his career in the steel industry when he started working in a steel shop for his father in 1963. He graduated from Purdue University and then served in the United State Navy Seabees from 1965 – 1969, which included two tours in Vietnam. He subsequently moved to San Diego in 1979 when he went to work for Bannister Steel. He began as an estimator, was promoted to General Manager in 1982 and then to Vice President in 1987. In 1996, after the passing of Ralph Bannister, Rossin and other partners bought Bannister Steel. Soon after, Rossin became the CEO.

In 1998, Rossin and his partners sold to Schuff Steel from Arizona. He continued to work for Schuff Steel for the next seven years. .In 2005, Rossin and Jeff Clinkscales, who have worked together for 28 years, established Rossin Steel. Rossin and Clinkscales have been involved in hundreds of projects in the San Diego area, including such high profile projects as Horton Plaza Mall, Del Mar Race Track Grandstands, Trolley Bridges, many buildings for Qualcomm, and the tower at Lindberg Field.

Rossin is very active in the construction industry and has served on the Board of Associated General Contractors San Diego Chapter (AGC) 17 years. In 2001, he was the first subcontractor to be named President of AGCSD. He was also one of the charter members who helped start the American Subcontractors Association Chapter in San Diego.

. Rossin is also committed to giving back and supporting the San Diego region. He is a board member of the Century Club, the San Diego Nice Guys and Bannister Family House, as well as a supporter of Mulcahy Food for Marine Families, Pro Kids, United Cerebral Palsy, Jackalope, and East County Boys & Girls Club. He was named the Construction Building Industry’s “Good Scout of the Year” in 2009 by the Boy Scouts of America.

Rossin and his wife, Connie enjoy time with their twin daughter’s and son’s families, including five grandchildren and two black labs.

“We are privileged to have Ted Rossin as our Nice Guy of the Year,” said Nice Guys President, Kristy Gregg. “His achievements as a businessman are matched only by his generosity for others in our community. He is a dedicated community leader who has been a long-time contributor to many organizations in San Diego. He exemplifies what the Nice Guys organization and its members are all about.”

The Nice Guys was formed in 1979 to raise money for individuals who need a helping hand up to get their lives back on track. The non-profit organization has no staff and is run entirely by dedicated men and women community volunteers. “Every single dollar we raise goes to needy San Diegans,” said Skip Hodgetts, this year’s Nice Guy of the Year Committee Chair.

The Friendly Sons have appointed him their “Parade Master for Life,” so in this year’s Parade you will see Mike leading the lads and their precision marching unit as he has done so well for over 20 years.

For the record, Brigadier General Michael I. Neil was born in Long Beach, CA and graduated from San Diego State University in 1962 with a B.A. degree in Pre-Law, and an L.L.B. degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley in 1966. After completion of Office Candidates School at Quantico, VA, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and upon graduation he was ordered to the 1st Marine Division for duty in the Republic of Vietnam.

He served as a platoon commander with Company D, 15th Battalion, 7th Marines and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action and later received the Navy Cross as a result of combat action. He then became an aerial observer assigned with the Air Observer Section, 1st Marine Division at Marble Mountain and was awarded six Air Medals. Returning to the U.S. in July, 1968, he was assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, for duty in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate serving as both a defense attorney and prosecutor in the legal offices of MCRD, until his release from active duty March 1970.

The Navy Cross: The second highest award for combat bravery the United States Navey can bestow.

Thereafter he attended the Reserve Amphibious Warfare School, the Reserve Command and Staff College, participated in the Reserve Counterpart Training and served as the Officer-in-Charge, Battalion, 7th Marines as the Battalion S-3 Tactical Exercise Control Group for the 5th Marine’s Combined Arms Exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, CA. He was then assigned to extended active duty with 1st Marine Amphibious Force, serving as Executive Officer of the Exercise Control Group Freedom Pennant I and II in Perth, Australia.

He served as Commanding Officer, 4th Tank Battalion located in San Diego and then with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Reserve Augmentation Unit as the Assistant G-3 for Plans, participating as Commanding General, IMEF during war games, including the annual Global War Game at Newport, RI. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1989. In September, 1990 he took command of Camp Pendleton as a result of Operation Desert Shield. At the time of his retirement on August 1, 1993, General Neil was the Assistant Division Commander of the 4th Marine Division.

In civilian life he is president and lead attorney of the law firm of Neil, Dymott, Frank, Mcfall & Trexler, specializing in civil litigation. He and his wife Jan have two children, Megan Louise and Sean Brendan.
